About Sailors for the Sea

Sailors for the Sea is an NGO founded in 2004 by David Rockefeller, Jr., head of the Rockefeller family in the United States, to improve the marine environment.

In 2018, the US headquarters merged with Oceana, the world's largest marine environment NGO, headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Japanese branch was established in 2011.

It is independently operated as a Japanese general incorporated association and has an affiliate agreement with Oceana.

Marine environment protection activities, which began mainly with marine sports enthusiasts at the urging of yachtsman Rockefeller, have developed into an NGO with the aim of making policy proposals and conducting public awareness activities.

We have a wide range of activities centered around three programs: raising awareness of sustainable consumption of marine resources through the publication of the Blue Seafood Guide; setting environmental conservation standards for marine sports and reducing plastic waste through the operation of the Clean Regatta Program; and educating children about the ocean through the KELP Program.

Sailors for the Sea is an official partner of the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the United States, and our Japanese subsidiary is expanding its activities both domestically and internationally with the support of The David and Lucille Packard Foundation, Walton Family Foundation, Moore Foundation, and Oceans 5, as well as agreements with local governments such as Tokyo Metropolis, Mie Prefecture, Hiroshima Prefecture, Hayama Town, Ashiya City, and Shima City, and partnerships with various companies and universities.
