Clean Regattas
Clean Regatta is a program designed to make sailing events, including yacht and boat races and other related activities (collectively referred to as "sailing events"), more environmentally friendly. This program encourages event organizers and participants to select and implement “Best Practices” and register as a Clean Regatta. By implementing these “Best Practices” and registering your regatta, your sailing event will be publicized as an activity that prioritizes the marine environment.
Sailors for the Sea supports your efforts by providing the Best Practices framework and registration process. Based on the chosen practices and level of implementation, regattas are recognized at “Platinum”, “Gold”, “Silver”, “Bronze”, or “Participant levels” and listed as "Current Regattas" for global visibility. After the event, you can apply for certification and receive a certificate from Sailors for the Sea.
The Clean Regattas program counts prestigious events like the America's Cup and Nantucket Race Week among its participants, with regattas from around the world joining the effort.
You can view currently registered regattas on our website.
Application procedure
1. Register your event as a clean regatta
Fill in the form and submit it to the Sailors for the Sea Japan. Regatta registrations for sailing events taking place in Japan will be accepted by the Sailors for the Sea Japan. Please register via this website.
2. Select best practice
Check the box and choose from 25 best practices that can be implemented. See the case studies page for reference information on implementation. Regattas are divided into “Gold”, “Silver” and “Bronze” levels based on the number of best practices selected. For each level of accreditation, 19 best practices for Gold, 13 for Silver and 7 for Bronze must be selected/implemented. If you select up to six best practices, you will be classified as a “Participant”. If you wish to register as “Platinum”, please contact the Sailors for the Sea Japan separately.
3. Decide who will be in charge of the Clean Regatta
Please decide who will be in charge of liaising with Sailors for the Sea regarding the application/implementation of the regatta registration (Clean Regatta Officer). This person will coordinate with the organisers of the sailing event and communicate the details of the regatta to all participants.
4. Express your commitment
Please announce your commitment to the Clean Regatta through your organisation's website or the website of the organisers of the event. The necessary information and logos for Sailors for the Sea Japan can be found in the press kit.
5. Implementation of best practice
During the execution of the registered sailing event, please keep a record of it as a Clean Regatta. Also, please refer to the examples that can be found on the Sailors for the Sea Japan website and devise ways to improve the effectiveness of your implementation, if necessary.
6. Obtaining certification
Once your sailing event has been registered, you can apply for certification. Fill in the required information on the application website and submit the application online. Sailors for the Sea Japan will confirm the implementation of your application as a clean regatta and issue you with a certificate.
Please provide us with any feedback you may have. The Clean Regatta programme can be further developed.
